About The Pet Pantry The Pet Pantry was started by Ellen, a resident at the CountryHouse located in Council Bluffs. In early 2009, Ellen adopted a cat from the shelter named Bella and would buy cat food six cans at a time and Bella would eat the first can but not anymore. Ellen would go back to the store and get six more cans of a different flavor and Bella would only eat one can and then no more. About 50 cans of unused cat food later, Ellen took the cans to the food pantry she volunteered at. Much to her surprise, the response from the grateful people was incredible it shined a light on the huge need for pet supplies. So, Ellen went home, told her granddaughter about what happened and they decided to do something about it. In August 2009, Ellen create the Pet Pantry. Ellen believes the Pet Pantry is important because if people can’t afford food for themselves then they also may struggle with buying food for their pets. This is a thought that makes her sad because the pets truly are family members to many people. Today, Pet Pantry helps roughly 6,000 animals per year. They accept anything pet-related such as food, bowls, leashes, beds, toys, etc. They also accept open food and as they repackage it up for give away.
