Position Summary
Joslyn Art Museum seeks applicants for a Preparator position. This position offers a motivated individual the opportunity to play a key role in the care and installation of works of art of various media from antiquity to the present. The Preparator will support the Collections Department with art handling, packing, design, and installation of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
Major Duties
• Facilitate basic care of permanent collection objects
• Assist with the installation of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions
• Maintain gallery lighting system, displays, and furniture
• Carry out pick-up and delivery of works of art locally and regionally
• Assist with loading and unloading of art shipments
• Fabricate, pack, and unpack crates and cases
• Prepare gallery spaces between exhibitions, including maintenance, repairs, and painting, as needed
• Reconfigure galleries with modular walls; fabricate and paint display cases and mounts
• Maintain woodworking shop and power tools; maintain regular inventory of supplies and materials
• Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• Art installation experience in a museum or gallery environment
• Knowledge of artists’ materials and techniques
• Ability to follow protocols in handling works of art with care
• Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs
• Ability to work on ladders and lifts to a height of 40 feet
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet scheduled deadlines
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently
• Valid Nebraska or Iowa driver’s license and the ability to drive small cargo vans and light trucks
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fine arts or related field
• Experience with matting, mounting, and framing works on paper
• Experience building mounts for three-dimensional objects
• Advanced carpentry skills and/or experience building crates and display cases
• Welding and brazing experience with a variety of metals
Salary
Minimum Salary: $20 per hour
Qualifications and experience will be considered in the compensation for this position.
