Position Title:        Mental Health Therapist

Department:        Special Education

Reports To:        Building Principal, Director of Special Education

Compensation:         Commensurate with Degree and Experience 

Calendar:         190 Days

Position Type:           Standard Salary



The Mental Health Therapist supporting either the Therapeutic Learning Program (TLP) or Specialized Behavior Services Program (SBSP), will be responsible for providing individual, group, and family therapy to the students currently rostered to TLP.  This position will also provide on-going support for the classrooms through a therapeutic approach.  In addition, this position will provide the building and building administration with guidance and strategies to better support students who are struggling. 



Essential duties must be performed on-site.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.

  • Provide individual counseling to students.

  • Provide group counseling to multiple students.

  • Complete initial mental health assessments on students.

  • Develop treatment plans and goals for students.

  • Collaborate with school staff and families to implement treatment goals.

  • Conduct family meetings to review goals and progress.

  • Collaborate with school staff during student support meetings.

  • Provide necessary information regarding student goals, treatment plans via the IEP process.

  • Be an active member of the IEP team during annual reviews and re-evaluations.

  • Collaborate with other district mental health professionals.

  • Coordinate and develop de-escalation techniques and interventions.

  • Assist in preventative behavior measures for students at-risk of change of placement.

  • Provide mental health crisis intervention as needed and refers to external resources when necessary.

  • Responsible for timely submission and accuracy of all required documentation.

  • Performs other program related duties as assigned.



  • This position does not supervise other employees.



  • Required: Master’s degree in social work or mental health field from a four-year accredited college or university 

  • Preferred: Experience working in an educational setting and with students who have behavior needs



  • Required: Valid Iowa licensure (LMSW, LISW, LMHC, or TLMHC)
